Subscribing an Individual to a Course Mail Mailing List as the List Administrator

To subscribe an individual to a Course mail list as the administrator, simply send mail with the subscribe command to the administrative address:

  majordomo@coursemail.umd.edu

with no subject, and the subscribe command in the body:

  approve  password  subscribe  list_name  email address

where password is the administrative password for the list (your new 9-digit University ID (U_ID) by default, NOT your old UMID/SSN or Directory ID), list_name is the name of the list to which you want to subscribe the individual, and email_address is the mail address under which you're subscribing them. For example:

  approve  123456789  subscribe  math999-0101-fall07  joeuser@umd.edu

You should receive a confirmation e-mail from majordomo@coursemail.umd.edu which contains a body similar to this:

  >>>> approve password  subscribe  list_name  email address
  Succeeded.

If the command was unsuccessful, the body of the e-mail will give some explanation as to why this happened. If you don't understand the error message(s), please contact the Office of Information Technology (OIT) Help Desk.
